PLACERVILLE, California (KOLO) - A man convicted in a 2017 murder in Placerville murder has been sentenced to 28 years to life.

Bernardo Castillo was sentenced for the murder of his mother Silvia and the attempted murder of his niece, identified as O.E.

On June 13, 2017, O.E.’s parents dropped her off at her grandmother’s home before leaving for work. Bernardo, who was temporarily living there, was also present.

When O.E.’s father returned later that evening, he discovered the grandmother deceased in the living room with multiple stab wounds, and O.E. on the floor critically injured from more than a dozen knife wounds.

O.E. survived, and an autopsy revealed that the grandmother had sustained around 41 stab wounds to her head, chest and back.

Bernardo was found in El Centro, California
