SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - A new proposal for the land surrounding Portage Manor would convert the property into a nonprofit for public use, St. Joseph County Surveyor Derek Dieter announced Tuesday.

The plan targets about 90 acres including the ravine and surrounding property, but does not compete with the St. Thomas More Academy proposal for the building itself. Instead, Dieter said the plan would work with the school to preserve the land.

“We are interested in the land which is about 90 acres including the ravine and all the property you see there. So, we started the process of talking to a local attorney of forming a 501, a non-for-profit,” Dieter said.
