ANN ARBOR, MI — Ann Arbor is updating a city ordinance governing vegetation on private property, including rules about how tall grass and other plants are allowed to grow.

City Council voted unanimously to give the initial OK to the latest ordinance draft Monday night, Nov. 17. It’s now due for another public hearing and final approval Dec. 1.

The changes eliminate a city rule that vegetation other than trees and shrubs on private property can’t be taller than 12 inches outside of a cultivated bed or planned natural landscape.

Council Member Erica Briggs, D-5th Ward, said in her latest constituent newsletter she hears every summer from residents frustrated they’ve received a warning or ticket because they have gone over the 12-inch height limit.
