WHITESTOWN, Ind. — Neighbors tell 13News Maize Lane in Whitestown has always been a relatively quiet and safe area.
They didn't want to go on camera, but several neighbors told 13News they were happy to see the Boone County prosecutor file charges against Curt Andersen, who allegedly shot and killed cleaning worker Maria Florinda Rios Perez , a mother of four.
On Monday, Boone County Prosecutor Kent Eastwood charged Andersen with one count of voluntary manslaughter, a level two felony.
Indiana University law professor Jody Madeira said she believes the charge is fair.
"Charging voluntary manslaughter aligns the fact that Andersen shot at a moment when he did not have a reason to, and shot intentionally — overreacted — again, with the fact that he did so without malice," Madeira said. "
