NEW YORK (WBNG) -- New York Attorney General Letitia James is reminding New Yorkers of their utility rights as temperatures drop.
Residential customers in New York have legal protections for essential winter weather services, including heat and hot water.
The state requires utility service providers to make extra effort to reach out to homeowners before heat-related shutoffs occur during the cold weather, and prohibits services from being shut off if health or safety problems will result.
Per New York Law, utility companies cannot shut off service to residential consumers during a two-week period, including Christmas and New Year’s.
