Three Mile Island, once the site of America's worst nuclear power accident, is set to start producing electricity again after the US Department of Energy agreed to a $US1 billion ($1.5 billion) loan.

The nuclear power plant, on an island in the Susquehanna River just outside Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, is under contract to supply power to data centres for tech giant Microsoft.

It was the site of the nation's worst commercial nuclear power accident in 1979.
