INDEPENDENCE, Va. — A Virginia Department of Corrections officer is dead, and two others are hurt after a reported inmate attack inside a Virginia prison.
Officials said this happened just before 8 a.m. Monday morning at River North Correctional Center in the southwestern part of the state, in Grayson County. They said inmate John Holomon Russell, 32, attacked 40-year-old Officer Jeremy Lewis Hall, who was later pronounced deceased at a local hospital. He'd been with the department since April 2024.
Two other officers who were injured have now been released from the hospital.
