The Kelowna Chiefs rode a dominant first 40 minutes to a 5-1 win over the Nelson Leafs in KIJHL play on Saturday night. Kelowna struck twice in the opening period, beginning with a power-play goal from Owen Ivanov at 13:41, followed by Brenden Stirbu at 16:10.
The Chiefs kept rolling in the second, adding three more. Matthew Balderston made it 3-0 at 10:15,
Ty Pannett extended the lead at 13:43, and Phinneas Bermel capped the surge with a late marker at 17:38.
Nelson broke the shutout in the third when Parker Toth scored at 12:31, but that was as close as the Leafs would get. Kelowna outshot Nelson 45–32 and finished 1-for-2 on the power play.
In goal, Michael Makowsky earned the win with 31 saves on 32 shots, while Jacob Armstrong made 40 saves on 45 shots for the Leafs.
