Texas (KWTX) - Three federal judges blocked Texas from using its congressional map drawn by Republicans, forcing the state to use the approved 2021 map for next year’s midterm elections.

The federal judges said they found evidence that supports Texas racially gerrymandered the 2025 map. Governor Greg Abbott called the ruling absurd.

The proposed map would have allowed Republican representatives to take over five more seats. The controversy led Texas Democrats to leave the state in August.

State Representative Pat Curry said much thought and calculation went into the map.

“I think they’re wrong, I think they’re overriding their bounds. They’re outside of their bounds by doing it,” Curry said.
