West Essex field hockey once broke Jill Cosse’s heart, but that pales in comparison to the joyous moments since.
Cosse’s only state final appearance as a player at Wall High School ended with a 3-1 loss to West Essex in the 1987 Group 3 championship game.
Little did she know at the time, but before too long, Cosse would take over that program, beginning one of New Jersey’s most historic coaching careers.
On Saturday, New Jersey field hockey’s 600-win club welcomed Cosse as just its fourth member, after West Essex picked up its 23 rd state championship - its seventh in a row - with a 2-0 win over Point Pleasant Boro in Bordentown.
All 600 wins have come on the West Essex sideline, a place she’s called home since 1997.
