SAN ANTONIO — A 15-year-old made his first appearance in court Tuesday after being charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon in a prohibited place Monday.

Police say he was caught at LEE High School with a gun in a backpack . In an email to families, administrators said they acted after receiving a report that a student "possibly had a gun"; staff said that, with the help of district police, they were able to find the student in question with a firearm.

Officials with the 436th Juvenile District Court told Judge Cruz Shaw the charge was so serious, the teen needed to remain detained.
