LINCOLN, Neb. —
Nebraska seems to be bucking the old saying from Benjamin Franklin about death and taxes, says State Auditor Mike Foley.
"You can't escape death, but you might escape your taxes," he said. "And that's not a good message for the, for the state to be issuing."
Foley's report, released this week, details a trend he calls alarming: unpaid personal and corporate income taxes.
"I talked to the governor about this this morning," Foley said. "He realizes they got to jump on this thing before it gets out of hand. Because you've got to hold people accountable for their civic obligation to pay the taxes that are legally due to the state."
Foley said over the decades, the amount of uncollected taxes has grown to roughly $310 million.
