Fire tore through an apartment building in Lowell, Massachusetts, leaving a man injured and displacing several families Tuesday afternoon.

The fire started just before 5 p.m. at the Westminster Village apartment complex on Pawtucket Boulevard.

Fire officials told Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra that a man living in the building was injured. There was no immediate word on his condition.

At least 12 apartments were evacuated, authorities added.

Residents said the flames were intense and spread rapidly. Videos shared by neighbors showed large flames shooting from the building's balconies.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
