California Gov. Gavin Newsom rubbed salt in the wound Tuesday after federal judges in Texas delivered a blow to President Donald Trump’s redistricting efforts.
In a 2-1 ruling, a panel of judges in El Paso found that Texas’ newly redrawn congressional map advantaging Republicans was an illegal race-based gerrymander that would harm Black and Hispanic residents.
“Donald Trump and [Texas Gov.] Greg Abbott played with fire, got burned — and democracy won,“ Newsom said in a post on X. ”This ruling is a win for Texas and for every American who fights for free and fair elections."
The three-judge panel’s ruling is a significant setback for Trump’s GOP as it seeks to keep control of both congressional chambers.
