Thailand has started stricter checks on foreigners who repeatedly enter and exit the country using visa-free exemptions, as authorities move to curb long-term stays and close loopholes linked to criminal activity, the Bangkok Post reported. The new measures follow instructions from Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and National Police Chief Pol Gen Kittharath Punpetch.
The Immigration Bureau said officers are now enforcing limits on the number of “visa runs” a traveller can make. Visa runs involve leaving Thailand briefly and re-entering to reset the permitted period of stay. Pol Maj Cheongron Rimpadee said the crackdown is part of a broader effort to combat cybercrime and other offences carried out by foreign nationals who have used visa exemptions to avoid proper long-term visas.
