A man who spent 38 years behind bars after being wrongly convicted of murder has claimed he was beaten by police officers and “bullied” into a false confession.

Peter Sullivan was dubbed the “ Beast of Birkenhead ” over the 1986 murder of Diane Sindall , who was attacked and beaten to death during a frenzied sexual attack.

Mr Sullivan, who has learning difficulties, had his conviction quashed by the Court of Appeal in May this year after new DNA tests were carried out.
