WEST OLIVE, Mich. — A decades-old coal power plant in West Olive, Mich. will remain open for at least another 90 days following a last minute emergency order from the United States Department of Energy (DOE).

Consumers Energy's J.H. Campbell Plant was slated to be closed at the end of May. but the DOE issued an emergency order to keep it open 90 days. After that 90 days, the DOE issued a second order in August, extending the plant's life through Nov. 18. Now, the DOE has issued a third emergency order, forcing the coal-fired power plant to remain open for another 90 days.

"I hereby determine that an emergency exists in portions of the Midwest region of the United States due to a shortage of electric energy, a shortage of facilities for the generation of electricity, and other causes.
