OTTAWA — While many around the world see Canada as the key to a better life, many who immigrate here don’t end up staying.

That’s according to a new report released this week by the Conference Board of Canada and Institute for Canadian Citizenship which suggests one-in-five new immigrants end up leaving Canada within 25 years, with many of the most skilled opting to depart within five years of arriving.

According to the board’s annual report, immigrants with higher education levels are more likely to leave Canada sooner.

“Within 25 years of landing, immigrants with doctorates are more than twice as likely to leave Canada as those with a secondary education or less,” the report read.
