PARMA, Ohio -- The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) recently completed the Veterans Basin project, which is designed to eliminate flooding by creating a retention basin in Parma.

NEORSD Senior Manager of Community & Media Relations Jennifer Pilkey Elting said properties downstream of Veterans Basin have experienced flooding for years.

“By increasing stormwater capacity during rain events, we will not only see reduced flooding, but improved water quality and better stormwater conveyance,” she said.

“While the basin’s primary focus is to collect stormwater, the native plants surrounding it will attract pollinators -- bees, butterflies and birds -- that will help in sustaining our local ecosystem.

“At Veterans Basin, more than 50 species of native species were planted.”
