New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani on Wednesday said that current police commissioner Jessica Tisch has agreed to remain in her position, in a bid to ease concerns over his past criticism of the New York Police Department (NYPD).

Mamdani, a democratic socialist who once advocated for defunding the police, now faces one of the most important decisions of his early administration.

His announcement of Tisch’s continued tenure serves as a reassurance to both business leaders and others who feared that Mamdani’s past remarks, particularly during the ‘Black Lives Matter’ protests, might lead to radical changes within the NYPD.
