BJ’s Wholesale Club is hoping to fill the long-vacant space at Towson Place shopping center left by Walmart’s closure, a move that hinges on Baltimore County’s approval of development plans, County Councilman Mike Ertel said.
Walmart announced in March that its two-level Towson store — formerly a Montgomery Ward — had underperformed and would close April 5. The pharmacy also closed that day. The company said its 207 employees could transfer to other locations and would continue to be paid through June 14.
The vacant Walmart building covers 154,828 square feet, according to plans filed by Kimco Realty , which owns the shopping center. Baltimore County officials did not provide a timeline for potentially approving the proposed plans by BJ’s or when the store might officially open.
