The only good thing about the federal government shutdown was the overwhelming public response to keep people fed while politicians carried on with typical showmanship during a crisis.
Payments through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, were threatened and in some cases paused due to the shutdown. Thankfully, those payments are back on track, but the attention over the issue gives us an opportunity to ponder SNAP’s effectiveness and future.
