A man has been slapped with an eight-year prison sentence after he was convicted for attacking a woman in Edinburgh.

Ali Chikane, 35, accosted a woman on February 5, 2024, on Murieston Crescent Lane in Dalry, leaving her seriously injured.

Investigators have praised the woman for her strength following the terrifying incident and called Chikane a "violent" individual.

Inspector Keith Taylor added: "I am glad he will now face the consequences of his despicable actions in prison."

A statement from a Police Scotland spokesperson read: "A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to eight years in prison following a serious sexual assault in Edinburgh.
