COLUMBUS — FirstEnergy’s Ohio utilities — Toledo Edison, Ohio Edison, and Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company — are required to pay a combined $250.7 million in restitution to customers and civil forfeitures, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio announced Wednesday.
PUCO’s orders are a result of the agency’s investigation it launched following the criminal investigation brought by the U.S. Department of Justice regarding the House Bill 6 corruption scandal.
The utilities are ordered to return nearly $180 million to customers over three billing cycles. The utilities will refund an additional $6.64 million plus interest for certain transactions that it billed to customers but lacked supporting documentation or were misallocated to customers, as identified by a PUCO audit.
