AUSTIN, Texas (KFDA) - The Texas Department of Agriculture and Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller have issued an alert regarding the outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus Type 1 (EHV-1).
The outbreak was first reported by Texas veterinarians after the recent World Championship Barrel Racing Finals in the Waco area on Nov. 5-9.
There are no confirmed cases in the Texas Panhandle at this time.
All horse owners, trainers, and venue operators who attended, those who were in proximity to the event, or those who have recently returned from any large equine gatherings near Waco in the last 14 days should monitor animals carefully.
Officials say clinical signs of EHV-1 can vary and may include fever, nasal discharge, lethargy and neurological signs.
