KILLDEER, N.D. — On Wednesday morning at Killdeer High School, representatives from the neighboring MHA Nation arrived in traditional regalia to present during the school’s first ever assembly for cultural awareness.
The MHA Nation comprises three tribes: the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara. MHA Nation is located on Fort Berthold, which borders Killdeer, and 85 students in Killdeer’s school district are from the indigenous community themselves. While Killdeer and MHA nation are neighbors, they have never engaged in a partnership like this before.
It all started when Janis Harris and Sean Elkins, who are both history teachers at Killdeer High, got in contact with Killdeer High School parent, Jessica Howling Wolf, who is an enrolled MHA nation member. Harris and Elkins both say that they were
