COLUMBIA, S.C. — With families preparing to gather for the holidays, medical social worker Pamela Pralow says breast cancer survivors are often “navigating a new normal” during a season that can be physically and emotionally challenging.

Pralow, a medical social worker with Lexington Health, said the biggest thing families can offer is grace. “You have to give them grace,” she said. “So the main thing is that they're navigating a new normal. And so with that new normal, things have changed.”

She said even favorite holiday dishes may taste different for survivors going through or recovering from treatment. “Their taste buds may have changed,” she said. “Your family member may love your sweet potato pie or the dressing that you used to make, but because of the seasonings, the chemotherapy
