BOSTON —
After a 5 Investigates report revealed rideshare drivers are getting away with rape, Boston's City Council urged swift action to close a loophole in state law.
In a unanimous vote, the council passed a resolution that supports a state bill that would make it a crime for rideshare drivers to have sex with their passengers.
The resolution, brought by City Councilor Ed Flynn, cited 5 Investigates' report, which revealed that prosecutors are dropping rape charges against rideshare drivers because of the difficulty of proving women didn't consent.
Under current state law, prosecutors have to prove that the suspect knew or should have known that the victim was incapacitated.
"This is about doing all we can to prevent this from happening again," said Flynn.
