TEXAS, USA — A newly formed joint legislative committee held its first hearing last week to address concerns about free speech and civil discourse on Texas college campuses, with Central Texas Representatives Shelby Slawson and Brad Buckley present.
The Senate and House Select Committee on Civil Discourse and Freedom of Speech in Higher Education was created by Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick just two days after the death of Republican commentator Charlie Kirk.
Political Violence Sparks Action
Senate Committee Chair Paul Bettencourt opened the hearing by addressing Kirk's death directly.
"Political assassination cannot be condoned in this country, period," Bettencourt said. "Once it happens, then we're no better than a third world country."
