The world’s top climate summit will not be hosted in Adelaide next year after Australia conceded to rival bidder Turkey.
Australia was expected to hold COP31 in 2026 but a surprise bid from Turkey derailed that, frustrating the Albanese government and other countries backing Canberra.
Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen said on Thursday talks for a COP31 “held in Turkey” but with him “appointed COP President for Negotiations” were ongoing.
He said they were thrashing out details for a “pre-COP is hosted in the Pacific” as well as a “pledging event for the Pacific Resilience Fund, which is so important to us”.
“Obviously, it would be great if Australia could have it all, but we can’t have it all,” Mr Bowen told reporters from the COP30 Summit in Brazil.
