New York State Assemblyman Michael Tannousis partnered with 70 volunteers Sunday to remove 1,125 pounds of trash and debris from Cedar Grove Beach.

The cleanup brought together Tannousis, a Republican who represents parts of Staten Island and Brooklyn, and a group of volunteers from ASEZ WAO, the young adult worker volunteer group of the World Mission Society Church of God. The effort aims to prevent plastic and waste from reaching the ocean and damaging marine ecosystems.

The event was part of ASEZ WAO’s “No More GPGP” campaign, which promotes global awareness and action to prevent expansion of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The organization operates in more than 175 countries.
