DAYTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Two monks were hospitalized after a car collided into them as their group walked down US 90 on Wednesday night, police said.

As a result, the US 90 eastbound lanes were shut down near Grand Parkway, the Dayton Volunteer Fire Department said.

Dayton Police Chief Shane Burleigh told ABC13 the group of monks was walking along the eastbound shoulder of US 90 just off the tollway, followed by a pilot car with hazard lights.

Authorities said a pickup truck driver, trying to get around the pilot car, struck it instead and pushed the car into two of the monks.

One monk suffered serious leg injuries and was taken by Life Flight, and a second monk with less severe injuries was transported by ground ambulance, police said.
