There is nothing reassuring about a cave with a name like Hell Hole, and even less comfort in the fact that its doorway is now protected by a steel-and-concrete structure called the “Mailbox,” an unmissable, heavily graffitied barrier with a narrow slot designed to stop anyone who isn’t the right size from attempting the descent. Tight as it is, the slot is still only a preview. Veteran cavers warn that the narrowest points beyond it are even tighter, and if a person struggles at the entrance, they should turn back.
