A principal has issued a warning to his school community after a man wearing gloves and a balaclava attempted to abduct a child from a bus stop in northern New South Wales.

Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar principal Stuart Marquardt said the boy, aged about 12, had just stepped off a bus at the intersection of Ourimbah Road and Miles Street at Tweed Heads when a man tried to grab him on Tuesday afternoon.

"One of our Middle School students disembarked from a school bus near their home and was approached by a man wearing a balaclava and gloves who attempted to restrain the student," Mr Marquardt said.

The boy was able to break free and ran home, but was shaken by the incident.

"The student was understandably distressed, as are the family," Mr Marquardt said.
