FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — Mike Nguyen began building an addition to his home on Marble Lane in Fairfax County earlier this year so his parents could live with his family.

“In our Asian community, we tend to take care of our parents when they get old and stay with us,” Nguyen said. “They’re able to spend more time with the grandkids.”

But right next to the Nguyen family, Courtney Leonard says the structure dominates her view every time she opens her front door. She worries the height could block the sunlight needed for her rooftop solar panels and potentially affect neighborhood property values.

Other neighbors share the concern.

“That is too high!” said Gayle Wynkoop, who lives a few houses down. “We kept coming by to see how big it was gonna get, and it kept growing and growing.”
