Four years ago, Matt Gay played a key role in the Los Angeles Rams’ Super Bowl 56 triumph. Now, he may get the opportunity to play hero for the enemy.
Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the 49ers are signing Matt Gay following his release from the Washington Commanders on Monday. San Fran’s main kicker, Eddy Piñeiro Jr., is considered week-to-week with a hamstring strain.
This was the 49ers’ second notable roster move ahead of Week 12. The team also signed 2024 UFL MVP and quarterback Adrian Martinez, releasing running back Sincere McCormick to make room for him.
Though Matt Gay has a solid career field goal percentage of 84.0, his 10-game stint with the Commanders was a nightmare. He made just 68.4 percent of field goal attempts, going just 4-of-9 from kicks beyond 50 yards, per Pro Foot
