As a theriogenologist (reproductive specialist), I was blessed with a number of good farm clients throughout Ohio, in addition to our local practice in Champaign and surrounding counties. It was in those days that I, with too much ego, thought the cow world depended on me.

A couple of times a month, I left home at 4:30 a.m. for a two-and-a-half-hour drive to the first farm to perform reproductive examinations on eligible dairy cows at the behest of whatever dairy farm had scheduled an appointment with me for that day. On those days, I could predict where my appointments were months in advance. I was super-efficient, often visiting anywhere from four to seven smaller dairies—well, really, the appointments were with the cows.
