Martin Aguilar, a 96-year-old man from San Ildefonso Pueblo, shares his remarkable life story, from growing up speaking Tewa to serving in the U.S. Army and guiding future generations.
"My name is Martin Aguilar," he said, introducing himself with a smile on a sunny November day at his home. "I'm 96."
He was born in 1929 at San Ildefonso Pueblo, known as the place "where the water cuts through." It is one of New Mexico's 19 Pueblo nations, located in northern New Mexico.
Aguilar grew up farming, a central lifeway for Pueblo people, alongside his father.
