NORTH CANTON, Ohio — Spirit Halloween stores have become such a regular part of the American landscape each fall that most people barely question the ritual anymore: A big-box store goes dark, signs go up, and suddenly the empty space is filled with fog machines, rubber masks, and towering animatronics.

But this year, that familiar cycle took an unexpected holiday twist.

When the Spirit Halloween in North Canton closed on Nov. 1, it didn't sit vacant for long. In fact, it didn't really close. It simply reopened as something new: Spirit Christmas , a holiday version of the seasonal pop-up built on the same model of taking over recently vacated storefronts.
