Former United States Vice President Dick Cheney's funeral is taking place on Thursday, Nov. 20 in Washington D.C.

The former VP died on Nov. 3 of complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease, his relatives said. He was 84.

The 11 a.m. ET service at the Washington National Cathedral is by invitation only, the Gothic cathedral announced on Thursday Nov. 13.

The public is invited to watch the service online. Security measures will be in place, according to the cathedral, "to ensure the health and safety" of invited guest as well as attending staff.

When did Cheney serve in office?

Cheney served under Bush from 2001 to 2009 and was considered one of the most powerful and controversial men to hold the office, in large part because of his role in leading the push to invade Iraq in 2003.

He turned into a critic of President Donald Trump following the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection, saying he voted for former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, USA TODAY previously reported.
