HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. — Police are investigating after one person was killed in a crash involving a deer and a semi truck on U.S. 31 in northern Hamilton County early Thursday morning.

The crash was reported around 4 a.m. Nov. 20 along southbound U.S. 31 near 256th Street about eight miles north of downtown Westfield.

A preliminary investigation indicated a Kia Optima was traveling southbound on U.S. 31 when it struck a deer and left the roadway and traveling down an embankment. Police say the vehicle traveled back onto the roadway and stopped when it became disabled in the road.

According to Hamilton County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Bryan Melton, the driver of the Optima is believed to have been standing outside the vehicle when both the car and driver were struck by a southbound semi.
