MIFFLINBURG — What is billed as the world’s biggest Christmas tree auction will be held Friday in Union County with an estimated 10,000 fewer trees than the 60,000 last year.
Some growers are producing fewer trees, Neil Courtney, manager of the Buffalo Valley Produce Auction, said Tuesday.
He attributes that to the prices being down a little last year. Also, fewer people are putting up a tree, he said. Live trees come in third after no tree and an artificial one, he said.
“There is not a live tree in every home these days,” he said. “People are really decorating for the fall, Courtney said. The pumpkin auctions were “off the charts,” he said.
Also, small growers are producing fewer trees, and there are not as many street corner sites for retail sales, he said.
