People with a specific types of coughs are being urged to see their GP as 600,000 people in the UK are believed to be suffering from COPD without a diagnosis. COPD stands for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and occurs when your lungs become inflamed and damaged, narrowing your airways and making it harder to breathe.
Unlike a cold or asthma, this narrowing is permanent and even the available treatments for COPD can only open your airways up to a certain extent. An estimated 1.7 million people in the UK live with the progressive condition.
Coughing is one of the most common and noticeable symptoms of the condition, but it’s specifically a cough that lasts a long time or comes and goes. Coughing up a lot of phlegm or sputum is also a red flag for COPD.
