The Supreme Court’s response to the 14 legal questions posed by President Droupadi Murmu on the limitations of her office and that of Governors - while acting on a bill or legislation has shed new light on the powers and responsibilities defined under Articles 200, 201 and 143 of the Constitution.
In effect, the top court today interpreted the scope, powers and limitations of Articles 200 and 201, which outline the steps a Governor may take when a bill reaches their office for assent, as well as the procedure for reserving a bill for the President’s consideration.
Article 201 further states that the President may either assent to a bill or withhold assent when it is reserved by the Governor. However, a problem arises when the President withholds assent for an indefinite period, as the
