Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te on Thursday shared photos of himself holding a plate of sushi on social media to show support for Japan, after reports that China might suspend Japanese seafood imports.
The dispute between Tokyo and Beijing was sparked after Japan’s new Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, suggested earlier this month that Japan could intervene militarily if Taiwan were attacked. China claims democratic Taiwan as part of its territory and has threatened to use force to bring the self-governing island under its control.
