WASHINGTON — Airline passengers without a REAL ID could be forced to pay $18 to get through airport security, under a new rule proposed by the Transportation Security Administration.

The proposed rule was published in the Federal Register Thursday , beginning a countdown during which the public will get a chance to make comments on the proposal.

Under the rule, if it is enacted, travelers without the correct documentation would have their identity verified at biometric kiosks before they're permitted to pass through airport security checkpoints. An $18 fee would be used to pay for the new technology operating these kiosks, according to the notice. The non-refundable fee would allow passengers to access TSA checkpoints for 10 days, according to the notice.
