A statue commemorating the late Celtic and Scotland legend Tommy Gemmell has begun construction in Wishaw.
A sod-cutting ceremony took place on Wednesday, November 19, performed by North Lanarkshire Provost Kenneth Duffy and Tommy’s widow Mary.
The event marked the start of work on a permanent statue of the Craigneuk -born hero, who is famed for scoring in two European Cup finals for Celtic FC, including the team's 1967 victory over Inter Milan in Lisbon.
The project is driven by the Tommy Gemmell Project Committee with support from the council’s Community Partnership Team, and is estimated for completion in early 2026.
