LORAIN, Ohio — Lorain officials say Republic Steel’s parent company is in talks with several international steel producers that are considering launching operations in the city, a move that could bring hundreds of jobs and signal a major industrial resurgence.

In a release on Thursday, Lorain Mayor Jack Bradley said Grupo Simec, the Guadalajara-based owner of Republic Steel, has been engaged in “encouraging discussions” with overseas steel manufacturers exploring U.S. production options. The companies are showing interest, he said, in part because current tariff conditions make American-based operations more economically attractive than producing steel abroad.
