Demolition has begun on 1001 King St. a week after Charleston City Council approved the work.
Located next to Rodney Scott's BBQ, the vacant building partially collapsed on Halloween, leading to a road closure from Grove to Francis streets that will stay in effect until the work is complete.
City Council, which approved $612,344 for the demo work, was told last week by City Attorney Julia Copeland that they still have not been able to locate an owner.
St. Johns Masonic Temple Lodge has owned the building since 1981, according to county property records. Copeland said she’s reached out to several national Masonic organizations but hasn’t found any that claim connections to the former Charleston lodge. Close
