A coyote was trapped and killed in the Washington Park Arboretum on Tuesday evening after it became too comfortable around people.

In two separate recent incidents, a coyote reportedly bit a dog on a leash and snatched food from very close to a person at the park. The city notified the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife, which it was working with on how to deal with a growing population of coyotes.

Parkgoers and staff were spotting coyotes in and around the Arboretum more and more frequently, Seattle Parks and Recreation spokesperson Rachel Schulkin said. Staff put up signs and launched a public service campaign to advise people how to behave safely with coyotes nearby.
